RockMelt, A social media web browser. Its early access version was published on November 8, 2010. Its a proprietary browser developed by Tim Howes and Eric Vishria and backed by Netscape founder Marc Andreessen.
Based On Chromium
RockMelt is based on Chromium. Chromium is a open source web browser project which in turn is based on WebKit, the open source HTML layout engine used by Apple, as well as a host of other projects from Mozilla and others. The Google Chrome browser also draws its source code from this project. All Chromium releases have been developmental with Google Chrome being the official release. The objective of the Chrome project is build a tabbed window manager and not a traditional browser. The developers state that it “should feel lightweight (cognitively and physically) and fast. RockMelt is also a release of the same Chromium project for Microsoft Windows and Apple MAC OS X only.
Integration with Facebook and Twitter
The RockMelt browser has integrated with itself a lot of features from Facebook and Twitter. This is the most attractive feature of RockMelt. Facebook users will find this very friendly as it provides the simplest interface to stay up-to-date with the latest information from your friends on Facebook. Its like your friends are integrated into the browser itself. You can chat and share with your friends with extreme ease.
As far as Twitter goes, you can also view the tweet updates on the browser itself. Its like a widget. You want to tweet, share links, pages, etc. you can do it on the browser itself. The coolest feature is the ability to share links without using the share widget or copying the URL. You can do this using a “Share” button near the URL bar. Its a one click process.
First Cloud Backed Browser
RockMelt is the first browser to be completely backed by the cloud. This means you can have your customized browsing experience anywhere and anytime. RockMelt also checks the pages you visit frequently and alerts you on updates. The content is already waiting for you when you open a RockMelt feed.
A New Experience
RockMelt browser provides you with a unique experience of having your preferences, friends, etc. integrated into the browser itself. One other feature of RockMelt that is real cool is the “Search”. It makes it simple and easy to find the page you want. I quote the RockMelt blog when i say, “Its like going through a magazine!”. As its the first cloud based browser it makes it even more special. For social networking, RockMelt is the best. This is only the beginning. The new RockMelt-specific Gmail Notifier App is a sign of good things to come. In the near future, with more features added, this may become an amazing browsing experience.
